6. Black Mirror

The new season is coming out this Friday, so why not prepare yourself watching the previous ones? While at times hauntingly accurate of what our world might become, Black Mirror never fails to keep you on the edge of your seat, with every single episode providing amazing quality content with thought-provoking messages. This anthology series has definitely earned its place as one of the best pieces of content out there, and one you certainly can’t miss.

5. The Big Short

The Big Short provides a fascinating view of the 2008 economic crisis, from the viewpoint of several key players. Adam Mckay’s excellent direction paired with snappy dialogue and amazing performances of the cast made-up of Steve Carell , Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling, results in one of the best films made in recent years. If you enjoy films like The Wolf of Wall Street, you will definitely love this. 

4. The Crown: Season 2

In its sophomore season, The Crown delves deeper into Queen Elizabeth and Philip’s relationship and other fascinating real-life stories. This season mainly focuses on the 60’s, introducing new players such as President John F. Kennedy, making this as good if not better than the previous one. Plus, coming off of several nominations at the Golden Globes, you better not feel left out and go binge it as soon as possible.

3. Mindhunter

Acclaimed director David Fincher brings this true story to life in a stunning 10-episode series, featuring a great buddy dynamic from Jonathan Gross’s Holden Ford and Holt McCallany’s Bill Tench. Visually striking and superbly written throughout, you have to be forgiven if you don’t think you’re watching a cinematic experience. It marks the second time Fincher helps out directing a few episodes for a Netflix series, the other being House of Cards. In addition, it makes a perfect companion for the next entry into this list:

 2. Zodiac

As Mindhunter, Zodiac comes from the twisted mind of director David Fincher. Also based in true events, this film explores the Zodiac murders through the span of the 70’s. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo, Zodiac is one of the best films in Fincher’s acclaimed catalogue of works. The ending, in particular, is spectacular. 

1. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)

A fairly new Netflix original movie from Noah Baumbach, The Meyerowitz Stories explores the dynamics of the Meyerowitz, a dysfunctional family, in a  way that is both funny yet heartbreaking at times. Baumbach injects a lot of realism into the dialogue, making you feel like you’re watching real people interact. It also gives Adam Sandler his best performance yet, something not often said about the “comedy” actor. However, Dustin Hoffman and Ben Stiller are not to be overlooked. It might be too slow for some viewers, but, at least for me, the dialogue and story kept me invested all the way through.
