While everyone expected a big weekend for the Pixar sequel, nobody saw this coming. ‘Incredibles 2’ not only unseated previous animated champ Finding Dory ($135M), but it also grossed more than juggernaut live-action superhero films ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. It turns out it was worth the 14-year wait for Disney.
‘Incredibles 2‘ is the rare film that is perfectly positioned for almost everyone to enjoy: young kids who are now adults powered this film, along with families who also turned out in droves. Mix in the excellent reviews and the A+ CinemaScore, and we should have a film that shows strong legs throughout the summer. It also posted some great numbers internationally, so we shall see how big it gets in the end.
‘Tag’ perfumed just as expected with a mediocre $14.6M in third place, almost in line with fellow WB R-rated comedy ‘Game Night’. The studio might have to wait for streaming to see some profit.
Next weekend, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom finally roars into theaters with tracking suggesting a $135M-$150M opening. That would be much lower than the previous installment’s $207M, but that film had the benefit of being the first Jurassic film in almost 20 years. ‘Incredibles 2’ performing much higher than expected might also hurt this film, so we’ll see.
